OASIS 50th Celebrations

1976 – 2026

We are a local action group from Swindon and the local area who are committed to saving the iconic Oasis Leisure Centre from closure and over development. The Oasis is a well loved institution to our town. While currently closed, we celebrated its exact 50th birthday on 1st January 2026 with a spectacular fireworks display – crowdfunded by the people of Swindon. The grade II listed dome was illuminated for the occasion and hundreds of people turned up. The display made BBC and ITV. Check out the BBC article here.

We are selling Oasis 50th Merchandise here.

The Oasis had an original target date to reopen in 2026, however this is indefinitely delayed, as plans are up in the air due to a previous rejection of housing on the site. We call on Seven Capital to build housing on the former Claires site across the road instead. The Oasis must not be overwhelmed by housing – the whole Oasis complex and land are treasured parts of Swindon.

NOVEMBER 2025 UPDATE: Seven Capital were refused permission for their housing on the Oasis site in July 25 – Everything currently uncertain with the site.

Our Campaign

The Oasis Leisure Centre closed in November 2020, after GLL surrendered their lease of the building. Since its closure, the building has sat in an idle limbo and its future left in doubt.

At the back end of 2020/early 2021 a small group of concerned citizens came together to form a Save the Oasis campaign. If you’re on social media you’ll find our Facebook page here. And Twitter here

In Dec 21, the Oasis Dome and Pool were both grade II listed, after a Campaign by SOS and the Twentieth Century Society. SOS is led by the passion of local Swindon man Neil Robinson, a former regular user of the Oasis right up until its closure. He is well connected, with many former Oasis members of staff on the campaign team.

Fast forward five years, Seven Capital were refused permission in July 2025 to build housing on the site, over concerns of over development. A total of 710 6-10 storey apartments were proposed within close proximity of the grade II listed dome. There were concerns about lack of parking provision, lack of affordable housing, lack of education contributions, traffic, harm to heritage setting and reduced facilities, with no Sports Hall.  The Oasis Hall is Wiltshire’s biggest indoor Sports Hall for a wide variety of Sports.

Developer Seven Capital proposed to eclipse the iconic grade II listed Oasis with tower blocks, forever spoiling the view of it on Swindon’s skyline from every direction.

Our campaign also fought for the wave machine to be included in the new Oasis, and other features to be retained. We are still pushing for a full Oasis to come back. The Oasis has now been closed five years, and turned 50 on 1st January 2026.

Did you dare to ride the ‘Dome Busters’?

The Oasis Leisure Centre grade II listed iconic Dome and Pool. The Lagoon Pool features a Wave Machine, Domebuster slides, Dolphin pool tiles, Crab tiles, Oasis Logo Mural, 70’s original globe lamps, planters and seats, as well as a space age lifeguard observation pod, learner pool and Pirate Ship. Our Campaign would love to see the Oasis restored back to it’s full former glory, better than it’s ever been before. It would be great to see an ‘Oasis’ of plants back around the pool, along with the restoration of Ken White’s murals. Swindon loves the Oasis!

The Oasis as a much-loved music & event venue

The Oasis is not only a leisure centre – it’s a music and events venue too. Over the years it’s hosted gigs from some of the most famous bands in the world. It would be an absolute tragedy to loose such a legendary facility. Even the iconic rock band, Oasis fronted by Liam & Noel Gallagher got it’s name from the centre after Noel visited in the early 90s with the band Inspiral Carpets.

The list of bands that have played the Oasis is extensive and includes: Ocean Colour Scene, Ash, Fun Lovin’ Criminals, Scissor Sisters, Hawkwind, Kings of Leon, Paulo Nutini, Simon Webbe, The Stranglers, The Zutons, Razorlight, McFly, Lil Chris’, Pet Shop Boys, The Fratellis, Hard-Fi, Bowling for Soup, The Bloodhound Gang, The Kooks, The Feeling, Scouting for Girls, The Pigeon Detectives, The Ting Tings, Paul Weller, Lemar, JLS, The Enemy, Kasabian, The Saturdays, Plan B, Peter Andre, N-Dubz, Pendulum, Motorhead, John Barrowman, Diversity, Stereophonics, UB40, McFly, Beady Eye, Fatboy Slim, Example, Alfie Boe, Matt Cardle, Cher Lloyd, Biffy Clyro, Ed Sheeran, Rizzle Kicks, Jake Bugg, Imagine Dragons, Paul Weller, Simple Minds, James Bay, Alice Cooper, The 1975, Years & Years, Kasabian, Tom Odell, The Script, Placebo, The Vamps, Anne Marie, Madness, Status Quo, Alexandra Burke, Basement Jaxx, Lilly Allen, Dizzee Rascal, Massive Attack.

Also many comedians such as Jimmy Carr, John Bishop and Jason Manford.

The OASIS - Since 1976 - An architectural icon built for change and built to last

The Oasis Leisure Centre had its official opening on New Year’s Day 1976. It’s a purpose built leisure facility with a beach style pool underneath the iconic dome. It houses other leisure facilities too and also serves as a large music venue able to  accomodate over 3000 fans.
